Description

Backyard Bounty is a family owned and operated business, founded in 2012. Every Thursday we source the best seasonal fruit and veg from around Tasmania, and send it out to you the following day. We also offer a small range of home-made preserves, and supply a range of local restaurants and retail outlets with fruit and veg.

Backyard Bounty source the best quality local produce – with a special focus on small growers and backyard producers – and deliver it to customers through our popular veggie box service.

If you’d like to try our vegie box service, www.backyardbounty.com.au for all the details, and email orders@backyardbounty.com.au to order.

If you’re a grower (small or large!) and you’d like to sell your produce to us (or trade it for box credit), please email backyardbounty.barter@gmail.com

Greg has always loved food and cooking, and Aimee is a keen gardener; the business started with the idea of taking home-grown fruit that often goes to waste in the peak of summer and turning it into preserves that could be sold all-year round. While continuing to work full time as a music teacher, the business began to grow, from selling a few jars to a local co-op, to a regular stall at the farmers’ market, and wholesaling products to a range of local retailers. Along the way, Greg picked up a swag of medals for the innovative products (including Tunisian Pumpkin Chutney and Gooseberry & Elderflower jam) from the local Fine Food Awards.

Gradually, it became apparent that working full time as a teacher and running the business wasn’t going to be feasible; but the market for preserves wasn’t really sufficient to provide a full-time income. In December 2013, Aimee suggested the idea of utilising some of the contacts from the local farmers’ market to start up a new arm to the business, delivering fresh Tasmanian produce with a focus on provenance to customers who couldn’t or didn’t want to go to a weekly market to shop for their weekly fruit and veg, but were disillusioned with the major supermarkets.

Veggie Boxes

Backyard Bounty vegie boxes are jam-packed full of fresh, local, seasonal Tassie produce. Each week’s box contains a wide range of produce, including but not limited to potatoes, root veg, leafy and salad greens, mushrooms and seasonal fruit for snacking – perfect for inspiring adventurous cooking, but down-to-earth enough for easy weeknight meals.

We choose what goes in your box every week, selecting the best of what’s in season and making sure that you get plenty of variety but also a compatible range of ingredients for cooking, but you can also set up your own exclusion list of items you don’t want included in your box. These items are replaced with others of equivalent value where applicable.

We offer three different types of boxes every Friday:

  • a $30 Small Box, ideal for singles or for those who like to supplement with other fruit/veg
  • a $40 Regular Box, which should last 2-3 people a week
  • a $50 Large Box, suited for families of four or more.

The following locally sourced optional add-ons to the above boxes are also available, including our $15 fruit supplement so you can make the most of Tasmania’s delicious but short fruit season.

Delivery is included in the cost of your box for a wide range of available areas in Southern Tasmania.

If you’d like to place an order, please send us an email at orders@backyardbounty.com.au. Please note that orders for each Friday’s box are due no later than Monday, 10 AM – this allows us time to make arrangements with our suppliers to ensure we have just the right amount of delicious fruit and veg to go around!

Wholesale

Welcome to Backyard Bounty’s wholesale fruit and veg service, offering the best and freshest local produce around!

We’ve spent the last 5 years developing a strong network of Tasmanian growers and producers to service our vegie box service, and we’re now offering hospitality and retail clients access to the same suppliers through our wholesale service. If it’s grown in Tasmania, chances are we know who’s growing it, where and how to get it.

As all the produce we offer is strictly from Tasmanian farmers only, what’s available for you to buy each week will vary – each Monday we’ll email out a list of what’s available and who’s growing it, and orders should be in by first thing Tuesday morning. All produce is picked and packed to order and arrives at our depot on Thursday, and is then delivered or available to pick up on Thursday or Friday by mutually convenient arrangement.

Please email backyardbounty.barter@gmail.com if you’d like to receive our weekly availability list or if you have any enquiries.
