Description

Unavale Vineyard was established in 1999. From trial plantings of 5 varieties, we now have 6000 established vines with a yield of up to 17 tonnes of fruit. Weather conditions at critical times such as fruit set are our main challenge, overcome by strategically planted wind breaks. Guinea fowl & Cape Barren Geese roam throughout the vines providing good pest control. Our Vines are mulched with organically rich natural mulch.

From the establishment of the vineyard – erecting trellising and planting vines through to pruning, harvesting and bottling we have been helped by a supportive community.

During our journey we have received a number of accolades. Our 2006 Sauvignon Blanc was rated as one of the ‘Best of the Best by Variety’ in the ‘James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2008 Edition’. Our Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling were described as ‘Two quite lovely wines’ and established our vineyard with a 4 ½ star rating. More success followed when our 2008 Sauvignon Blanc was awarded a Bronze medal at the Royal Hobart International Wine Show in 2008. Our 2008 Riesling and 2008 Chardonnay received Bronze medals at the 2011 Tasmanian Wine Show and 2009 Sauvignon Blanc  received a Bronze medal at the Hobart Wine Show in 2011. 2017 Saw our 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon take out a Bronze Medal in the Museum Section of the Tasmanian Wine Show.

FLINDERS ISLAND

Flinders Island is situated in Bass Strait between Tasmania and the Australian mainland. Home to a community of around 850 people, it is becoming a popular tourist destination – a perfect getaway from the stresses of modern life.

The Vineyard adds another dimension to the island experience. Yet another quality product from Flinders Island, it is assisting to create the island reputation for excellence. Every sip of our wine contains the passion of those who willingly turn up over and over to be part of the experience. Our vineyard is located at Badger Corner on the southern end of Flinders Island. With views over Franklin Sound to the south and the Strzelecki Range providing a backdrop, it is located in one of most beautiful parts of the island.

The climate on Flinders Island is milder during winter as the maritime influence prevents frosts. Summers are warm with plenty of sunshine needed to ripen the grapes.

Flinders Island is also becoming well known for quality produce, and wallaby and lamb are on the menu in top restaurants around the country. Just as well known is the crayfish and abalone industry which produces incomparable world class products.

Our visitors also experience this ‘down to earth’ connection as they explore the magnificent beaches or climb mountains, bushwalk, go topaz fossicking, gemstone hunting, birdwatching, wildflower photographing, kayaking, fishing, bike riding or simply drive around viewing the wonderful scenery.

All islanders recognise the uniqueness of our existence and the importance of retaining the charms of the island.
