The State Cinema is a Hobart icon that has entertained generations of Tasmanians for 100 years, playing a major role in the social and cultural life of the Hobart community.

CINEMA

The State Cinema is a nine screen boutique independent cinema specialising in international, Australian and quality film with a focus on a mature audience. We specialise in Film Festivals and Event Screenings throughout the year and the complex includes a Rooftop Cinema, large Café Bar and Bookstore. Fewer ads and only the choicest selection of trailers means that our features start just five minutes after the scheduled start time.

CAFE

A large Café Bar serves light meals and you can take your coffee or glass of local wine in to the screening. 

Operating 7 days a week, all year round (except Christmas Day) the State Cinema and Café is open from 10.30 am daily.

The State Cinema Café offers a casual and relaxed dining atmosphere in an intimate and contemporary space. Our diverse all-day menu is inspired by seasonal fresh produce and is created with classic flavours, including a vast array of delicious desserts.

A selection of fine local wines, cider, beer and spirits along with an assortment of non-alcoholic beverages and great coffee are available at all times – the perfect accompaniment to any dish, or to simply enjoy whilst sinking into a comfortable leather chair.

Soak up the afternoon sunlight as you enjoy sweeping views of the Domain, city and the iconic River Derwent or just grab a quick bite before or after your film – we’re open every day of the year.

Reservations are not needed as we have ample seating capacity, but we do ask that large groups check in with staff on arrival so that appropriate table arrangements can be made.

Please note that we are not able to provide wifi, power or meeting facilities and there is an expectation that patrons utilising our cafe spaces will be making purchases. Furniture can only be moved by our staff.

BAR

Our gorgeous bar, located in the part of the old Soundy building that was once home to our Bookstore, is throwing the doors open. We have selected a stunning range of wines and spirits from our island home, and even the art on the walls is Tasmanian. We look forward to welcoming you in for a glass of your favourite tipple soon.
