Our Story

After spending two and a half years living aboard and sailing the East coast of Australia. We fell in love with a life on the water. Our family moved to Tasmania for Taylor (The Skipper) to chase his passion of boats, especially wooden boats! Taylor was a successful applicant of the one year Shipwrights course at the Wooden Boat Centre in Franklin, Tasmania. He has also had experience working on a 5 star ferry service in the Tropical Whitsundays going between Hayman Island and Hamilton Island.

While enjoying a drive south of Franklin, we stopped at Heriots Point Vineyard in 2021 to taste their magnificent Pinot’s on offer and there was La Drone sitting at the dock in a ray of sunshine. We asked if we could have a look and as soon as we stepped aboard, we knew she was perfect, she was just about to go on the market and was in commercial survey. La Drone stole our hearts and we knew she was our next big step, owning a charter boat.

This seemed like a fated visit as it was an opportunity we have talked about for a good few years now, and a historic wooden boat as well. Well, we couldn’t resist and bought the 1948 Tasmanian built motor cruiser to help keep wooden boats alive and showcase the beautiful area we live in.

La Drone

La Drone was built in 1948 on the Tamar River, Launceston, Tasmania. She is a 38ft motor cruiser/ passenger ferry and has worked and lived her whole life in Tasmania making her a historic vessel worthy of being published in the book ‘Those that Survive’.

She is in commercial survey and is able to carry 12 passengers, with a draft of 0.9m and a spacious all weather enclosed cabin and open aft deck all make her perfect for intimate cruises up the Huon River.

Her home base has been in the Huon River for over 10 years at the Heriots Point Vineyard and is the perfect stop to escape and take in the natural beauty Tasmania has on offer.
