Corinda is situated about half a kilometre away from the old Campbell Street Court and Gaol. The land was originally part of the convict-run vegetable garden, and the garden wall dates from this period. A cottage was built on the site in the 1850’s, this became the servants quarters of the main building when it was built in 1880. Alfred Crisp, the builder, was a wealthy timber merchant and son of a convict. He later became Lord Mayor of Hobart. After Alfred died, his daughter lived on in the house until about 1930. The property then became a boarding house before reverting to a private residence in 1980. Corinda’s historic outbuildings, the gardener’s residence, the servants quarters and coach-house are now delightful self-contained cottages.

WEDDINGS

Wonderful weddings are part of what we do here at Corinda. You two lovebirds, and up to 120 family and friends, assemble for the ceremony in our enormous flower-filled formal garden. Afterwards, everyone can linger for canapes and award-winning Tasmanian champagne. If the weather is unfriendly, we can organise the ceremony in our magnificent Wellington Room instead, overlooking Hobart’s famous mountain.

For those all-important photographs, there can be no finer location than Corinda. After another drink or three, and more nibbles, everyone disperses to party on at a nearby specialist venue. On request, our experts will help you choose a photographer, a musician or two, and a party location that suits your needs.

Before the Big Day, and afterwards if you like, the bridal couple, their nearest and dearest and favoured friends can book our Cottages and garden Pavilions as long as they wish…

THE GARDEN

Covering well over an acre, Corinda boasts one of the finest private gardens in the whole of Tasmania. Laid out in a series of “rooms”, or compartments, defined by yew and box hedges with antique urns, delightful topiary figures of native animals and tiers of espalier limes, it is richly planted to provide colour and botanical interest throughout the year.

A magnificent Magnolia tree, more than 100 years old, is floodlit at night and visible for miles around.

The garden won a major National Trust Award in 1995, and is occasionally open to the public. Interested groups are welcome to book a guided tour.

FOOD & DRINK

Our breakfasts are famous! Ingredients are Tasmania’s finest, and you can have your free range eggs cooked whichever way you prefer. Our thinly sliced bacon is something very special, our croissants and bread rolls come direct from Jean Pascal – Hobart’s best known artisan bakery, and we always have fresh juices and fruit on hand. A continental breakfast in the glass verandah in the main house is included with any hotel room booking.

If you are very hungry and after a hearty start to the day, why not book a cooked breakfast.

Booking a Cottage or Pavilion? You can choose a rate with breakfast included when booking a cottage, otherwise book individual days when you arrive.

Our Honesty Bar in the drawing room is well stocked with Tasmanian whiskies, gin, vodka, wines and (in the fridge beneath the bookcase) craft beers and soft drinks. We have a range of pre-mixed classic cocktails, just add ice and lemon or why not mix one yourself?

For pop-up restaurants, high teas and other events, follow the Events link to see when our next event will be held. Pop-up dinners are great fun and take place on Friday evenings.
