The Pondering Frog

The Pondering Frog is a Cafe & Ice Creamery on the East Coast of Tasmania. Its mission is to supply high quality information, service and product to the travelling public on the East Coast of Tasmania. Since opening the gate in July 2014 the owners Lester and Collette have developed what was a shed in a paddock selling ice cream and smoothies out of the kitchen, to a vibrant place to stop, relax in a garden setting, with a children’s playground and enjoy a light snack, tea or coffee or just an ice cream. As the gate way to the National park it is becoming known as the place to go for a personalised itinerary to enjoy the gems of the East Coast Drive.

We are more than an ice cream shop:

We offer all day breakfast, our famous seafood chowder, Surf and Turf hamburger, natural oysters, Devonshire teas with a super large scone, scrumptious pancake stacks, toasted sandwiches, fish and chips, nuggets, pies, salads and soup just to mention a few things you can ponder to fill the rumbling tummy! We are licensed so you can sit and relax and enjoy a glass of wine or a beer with your meal.

Or come on in and try our famous handcrafted ice creams. You can ponder whether you have our famous chocolate coated ice cream, an ice cream sandwich or for a true indulgence , our berry sundae with home made raspberry or strawberry topping.

We source most of our ingredients locally for a true taste of Tasmania and our menu varies according to supply. We also offer tastings of our cherry wines and liqueurs and homemade jams, chutneys, pickles and toppings. You will also find local honey, peanut butter and fruit liqueurs. Our range is continually expanding .While pondering the shelves you may see a frog you would like to buy as a gift.

Open 7 days from 8am – 7 pm in summertime , The Pondering Frog caters for the late leavers from the Freycinet National Park. Winter trading is 9am to 5pm. 

We are located at 16494 Tasman Highway, via Bicheno TAS 400 m from the Coles Bay turn off on the south side. Approximately 2 hours drive from Hobart or Launceston.

We offer full Cafe facilities. We have a restroom with disabled and baby change areas available for cafe customer’s convenience.

There is a children’s playground catering to all ages, including a large frog slide.

Our goat are very friendly and love to be patted while the alpaca keeps a watchful eye.

We have an RV Stop Over Area at The Pondering Frog Cafe Ice Creamery for RV’s that are fully self contained – donation box.

We are RV friendly – for caravans, motor homes, boats and buses to park.
