Australia’s most immersive wilderness experience, a boutique wilderness retreat inside Tasmania’s World Heritage Area.
Pumphouse Point is a unique adults-only retreat, poised elegantly on a glacial lake and surrounded by century old forests in Tasmania’s world-heritage wilderness.
In the middle of Tasmania, on the southern hemisphere’s deepest lake, awaits one of Australia’s most iconic wilderness experiences. Tasmania at its most tranquil, or its most rugged. Numinous beauty grinds time to a halt… for quiet awe, calm, and reconnection. Constructed more than 70 years ago to pump water for hydro-electricity, the iconic Pumphouse has been given new life as a boutique wilderness retreat. It’s an entirely unique experience, from honesty bars and fire feasts, e-bikes and bushwalks, highland massages and rowboats… immerse yourself in the wilderness like you never have before. Surrounded by some of the most dramatic natural landscape on the planet, the scene is set for your new favourite memory.
There’s an ambience in our dining room that’s hard to put into words. You’re here together, in the heart of the wilderness, bonded by your experiences of this place. Wine, conversation and courses flow, with the ease of a big family dinner. Hearty, high-quality fare highlights our small-scale growers and producers.
We do our best to cater to food intolerances and can accommodate only basic dietary requirements (GF, DF, V, VG).
Covid rules are in place for all dining.
SHARED-TABLE DINNER
Dinner in the Shorehouse is included in the room rate for all guests each night, featuring a seasonal three-course set menu – nourishing soups, roasted and braised meats, fresh vegetables, and decadent desserts are the norm.
SATURDAY FIRE FEASTS
Saturday nights are extra special here. In our alfresco area this fiery feast features local meats seared over flames on two enormous Asado grills, with antipasti, chargrilled vegetables, puddings and indulgent extras. Gather around the fire over mulled wine and share stories of the wilderness. This is a dinner to remember and is included in the room rate.
HIGHLAND BREAKFAST
Breakfast is included in the room rate each day. Cook your eggs to your liking, build a toastie with local ham and cheese, indulge in homemade baked beans and Tassie bacon, or for a lighter option, fill a bowl with artisan granola, fruit compote, and natural yoghurt. It’ll set you up for the day nicely.
IN YOUR ROOM
Each room has a larder filled with tempting produce – artisan cheeses, cured meats, antipasti, on-the-go snacks, wines, beers, and cider. Graze away on a platter or pack a delicious picnic to whisk away on a hike or an e-bike.
HOT CRUSTY BREAD
There are few more hunger-inducing smells than fresh crusty bread. We deliver a complimentary hot sourdough loaf to accompany your larder goods – the perfect addition to your picnic or platter.
HONESTY BARS
There are three bars at Pumphouse Point… but no bar staff. Each lounge has a fully stocked help-yourself bar, warmth from wood fires, and magnificent views.
EIGHTEEN ROOMS, ACROSS TWO HERITAGE BUILDINGS, IN THE MIDDLE OF TASMANIA’S PRISTINE WILDERNESS
The two iconic industrial buildings, once operating as a Hydro-Electric station, quietly gaze at one another; “The Pumphouse”, over the water, and “The Shorehouse”, over the land.
The rooms themselves are less important here; think of it more like a lodge. It’s about connecting to the wilderness, so you won’t see art on the walls or access to netflix. In fact, there’s no Wi-Fi here at all, but we can help you with urgent matters at reception. Stepping out of your comfort zone is all part of the experience.
Spacious communal lounges, honesty bars and wood fires are in both buildings. They all have spectacular views, and regardless of which room you choose, you’re welcome to drift between them at any time. Dinner and breakfast are in the Shorehouse dining room, every day.
Then there’s our exclusive private Retreat, a spacious and luxe option tucked in the forest for one couple to have all to themselves…
